I'm trying to import a csv into the pivot creation tool but everytime i get the error "error exporting data" or and unhandled exception error. What is the process for importing data into the tool?

To import .csv for successful publishing:

Default UAC levels in Windows Vista and Windows7 require you to run PCM as administrator.

Ensure the first line in your csv is a comma delimited list of the exact Table Column List as it appears in Pivot Collection Maker (PCM).  The general idea here is to make the spreadsheet columns in PCM appear identical to the spreadsheet columns that would be rendered from your .csv file in some other application.

  • The first 4 delimited values in your .csv have to be the default PCM Item Attributes categories; in order: "Image Location", "Name", "Href", "Description".
  • If you have exported your .csv from the Pivot Collection Tool for Excel (PCTfE), your column list will begin with more Item Attribute categories than the default in PCM.  In this case you will have to delete the following automatically generated PCTfE columns before you export the .csv from Excel: "Image", "Preview", "LastFilename", LastFiletime", and "LastImage".
  • If you have exported your .csv from the PCTfE you will also have to delete the very last line which begins "Hint: Use the collection properties tab below to edit collection-wide properties.", including all trailing commas on that line.

You will have to manually create any custom columns in PCM by first adding a category in the Pivot Category List, and then adding that category to the Table Column List. This adds a column to the spreadsheet in PCM.  Once you have precisely recreated your table, you should be able to use the Import Data option on the File menu within PCM.

Accurate publishing will depend upon your further mastery of the quirky goodness that is PCM.  Make sure to review the Category and Visible options for each column in the Pivot Category List and of course the Publishing Information.
